It's Goodwear. And It's Better. But why?
Since 1983, founder Stephen Liquori has been manufacturing premium cotton staples and basics from the ground up. Rather than ordering finished product, Goodwear starts with the yarn, sourcing the perfect choice to knit any number of our proprietary fabrics. By focusing on the fabric first and being involved at every step along the way, Goodwear is able to produce an extremely high quality finished garment with exceptional attention to detail.
At any point in this process, you will find dedicated men and women working together to create a truly authentic, American-made product. Clothing to feel Good about.
Stephen's love for creating clothing started in the 1970's when he was attending Boston College. He found a passion for making his own silkscreens and hand-printed t-shirts for the city's local track & running clubs, as well as his own BC track team. That shirt in the photo is one of his first.
This passion turned into his career when he opened Glad Rags, a retail T-shirt shop in Chestnut Hill, MA shortly after he graduated college. Around this time, he opened a factory in Allston, MA which became a major screen print supplier for prestigious athletic apparel sportswear brands across the country.
In 1983, Stephen founded Goodwear USA. He was tired of the low quality, thin fabric, cheap t-shirts popular at the time. He wanted to start a clothing brand that made a premium, heavyweight t-shirt that would be excellent for screen printing and durable enough to last.
A few years later, Stephen designed what remained the signature Goodwear heavyweight T-shirt. It was made using 12 singles yarn in a 7.2 osy, 100% cotton jersey fabric. Today, the Classic Fit Crew Neck continues to be our best-seller.
The success of this fabric and style led to a collection of products that grew Goodwear into a premium sportwear brand at the start of the 1990's - alongside brands like Champion, Russell, Reebok, and more.
In the early 1990's, Goodwear produced the merchandised clothing for the San Francisco Marathon. A Boston-based East Coast company, this gave Goodwear new and considerable exposure on the West Coast.
Serendipity struck, and unforseen by anyone, a prominent Japanese fashion importer discovered Goodwear here, and changed the course of the brand forever.
In 1994, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) officially began, and most sportswear brands moved production to Mexico in favor of cheap labor - at the expense of the American worker. A quick decline of the American textile industry followed.
Steve's committment to his Made in USA promise only strengthened the new relationships in Japan. Over the next 10 years, Goodwear exploded to become a household name in Japan, sold across the country in premium stores and shops.
In 2004, Japanese magazine "MONO" named Goodwear's Classic Fit Crew Neck in its Masterpiece Collection as one of the Top 50 Styles in Japan, alongside products like Adidas shoes and Casio watches.
After 40 years, Goodwear has developed a cult following around the world, regarded for its consistent, high quality construction, timeless styling, and the uncompromised dedication to producing everything in the USA.
Goodwear's presence in Japan cannot be overstated, found in premiere department stores and boutiques across the country.
As well as here online, you can find Goodwear at a number of retailers in the USA and around the world.
