How To Incorporate Made In USA Clothing Into Your Wardrobe: Styling Tips And Tricks

Posted by Peter Liquori on

As more and more people become aware of the impact their choices have on the environment and the economy, the demand for sustainably-made, locally-produced, well-crafted clothing is on the rise. For those looking to incorporate more American-made clothing into their daily wear, or simply build a more conscious wardrobe, it can be a bit of a challenge to know where to start. But fear not, we’ve got you covered! Below, we will highlight some styling tips, as well as some high quality, made in USA clothing brands we love that can elevate your wardrobe staples.

High Quality Made in USA Basics

First, let's discuss the importance of high-quality daily basics. It’s crucial to invest in well-made pieces that can stand the test of time, in terms of both durability and style. Trends come and go with the seasons, so fast-fashion capitalizes on that by producing cheap clothing that doesn’t last. Usually it’s the tees, underwear, and “classics” that suffer the most. Everyday basics are the building blocks of good style and outfits, so it's important to choose pieces that can be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion. And will actually last “a thousand washes”.

For all the reasons we touched on in our article “Things You Need To Know Before Buying Made in USA Clothing”, we will always advocate for made in USA brands.

Made in USA T-Shirts

T-shirts are the be all and end all of everyday casual wear, which makes them the perfect place to start when looking for an upgrade. Opt for premium weight (6.0 osy or higher) 100% cotton tees. These will last multiple wears and washes, and hold their shape over time. When styling for a casual fit, few things can compete with a classic, relaxed fit T-shirt. It pairs with nearly everything. For a more elevated look, try layering a t-shirt under a blazer, or pairing it with chinos and a slick pair of shoes.

Made in USA Jeans

Jeans are another true essential. Until the 1990’s, all of the major brands were made in the USA, but finding a classic pair of American made Levi’s is tough at the thrift store, or will cost you on eBay. Today’s run-of-the-mill denim is almost always cut with spandex or polyester, and uses a thin gauge of yarn resulting in a thinner fabric. A pair of 100% cotton, well made American jean lasts years compared to a new pair from the department store. A good pair of jeans should be versatile and can be worn casually with T-shirt, or dressed up with a button-up and dress shoes. Opt for classic, timeless styles and washes that won't go out of fashion.

Our pick (personal favorite): Raleigh Denim Workshop

Made in USA Chinos And Khakis

Not just corporate anymore, slacks today have become an everyday casual pant. But like jeans, it’s hard to find a pair not cut with polyester, and with a heavy fabric that can stand up to more than just sitting in an office chair. The most durable khakis will have a heavy twill fabric and well constructed seams.

Our pick: Jack Donnelly

Made in USA Button-Up Shirts And Oxfords

A well-fitted button-up shirt can be dressed up for the office or dressed down for a night out. Look for 100% cotton and a classic design that can be worn for years to come. Worn with jeans, chinos, or dress pants, tucked in or left loose,  the button up is a versatile piece in any wardrobe.

Our pick: Gitman Bros

Made in USA Outerwear

Authentic, made in USA outerwear is particularly hard to find. The iconic and classic brands are now made overseas, with just a handful of (very expensive) options made in the USA. Honestly, we suggest going the second hand route, Poshmark, eBay, or the local second-hand store. Some of the best pieces in our personal collection are made in USA LL Bean, Woolrich, and Filson styles. Unfortunately, these are no longer made in the USA, and the modern versions are often twice as expensive as a “like new” second hand option.

Our Pick: The Local Thrift Store / eBay / Poshmark

Made in USA Swim Trunks

It’s almost summer, so we had to include some trunks. Theres nothing like the freedom to roll off the beach, dust the sand off your shorts, and toss on a tee to meet up with some friends.

Our pick: Birdwell

When it comes to incorporating Made in USA clothing into your wardrobe, it's important to remember that quality and durability are key. Invest in these high-quality pieces that can last you for years to come, and focus on building a collection of versatile wardrobe basics that can be worn for every occasion.

As a bonus, slowly upgrading your wardrobe will help support local businesses, reduce your environmental impact, and help make the stuff you wear everyday mean just a little bit more.
